I have been Quoted out of Context: Afridi

Islamabad, Apr 5 (PTI): After creating a furore by stating that Indians are not ''large-hearted'', Pakistan's ODI cricket captain Shahid Afridi did a volte-face, claiming that he was misunderstood and quoted out of context.

"Media makes a big deal of small issues. It is shameful. I have always done my bit to improve Indo-Pak ties but sometimes you say something and it is interpreted the other way. I have been quoted out of context," Afridi said.

"I have enjoyed my cricket in India and I love Indian people. Don't take my comments negatively. I have always got a lot of love and affection from Indian fans. And I request the media to play a more positive role and not waste time on such trivial issues," he told 'NDTV'.

A close aide of Afridi told PTI that "whatever Shahid said about Indo-Pak relations was after he was asked about the statement made by Gautam Gambhir that the World Cup victory is dedicated to the victims of the Mumbai terror attacks."

"Watch the show again. It is clear Shahid was speaking in general terms when he was reminded that while he had said on returning home that Pakistanis should not treat India like a enemy, Gambhir had talked politics and tried to play up anti-Pakistan sentiments," the aide said.

Afridi's aide said while the cricketer spoke positively about India, the players across the border were doing the opposite about Pakistan.

"That is when Afridi made the remarks about Indians not being big hearted like Pakistanis and their media being very negative about Pakistan," the aide said. As the remarks by Afridi caused a stir in the Indian media yesterday, the Pakistan captain preferred to power off his contact phones and go underground.

He is due to travel to Lahore today to meet national selectors who are due to announce the Pakistan squad for the tour to  the West Indies. Afridi, after initially making himself unavailable for the tour due to personal reasons, has now opted to tour the Caribbean and play in the limited over series.

Afridi's aide said the all-rounder was a firm believer that sports and politics should not be mixed together. "That is why he was so upset with the reported statement of Gambhir," he added.

Yes,Afridi is the captain of a country, but it is a terrorist country.

Your good Pakistani friends will be helpless in a country where fundamentalist army and ISI dictates the terms. They themselves will become the victims of these fundamentalists. Do not depend upon them. Be practical and join us to strengthen our motherland.

    Dear Shetty udupi,
Pls don’t mix politics and cricket. Even though Afridi is "unpad gawaar" as you said, but still he is a captain of his country and for your kind information all Pakistanis are not bad people and I have so many Pakistani friends here they are very friendly with us.

    Mr.Shetty, Udupi, your are right.

Pakistan is a born terrorist state with the sole aim of destroying Hindus and India. It has done innumerable atrocities on Hindus at the time of partition which is greater than the one committed by Hitler to jews.

Please also note the Pakistanis inside India who call Afridi as a gentleman. They are slow poisons.

What more we can expect from Afridi, poor fellow, unpad gawaar, no education at all !
This is what pakistan and pakistanis are worth. We Indians led by a puppet PM and shameless politicians still seeking friendship with these hypocrites. When all of a sudden PM's invitation was announced it was a big heart break for all those who lost their loved ones life to Pakistan's terror hand. Without chopping of that terror hand, PM handshaked shamelessly. I don't know when we will learn the lesson that Pakistan is a failed state and it doesn't deserve attention from a free democracy called INDIA.
Afridi is right in saying that we have small hearts, we forget the innocent civilians killed in terrorist attacks the continuous hatred speeches generated in his country against us still we invite them, party, dance with them. Does any Pakistani has the guts to do what we do, we are still thinking what to do about Afzal guru, Kasab etc who would have been long uted if they were Hindus and the done same in his country.
Cut of all these cultural exchange, so called Samjoutha express etc.., Ban singers, cricketers, artists pouring into India, they accumulate money in India and use against us.

It seems he too has the knack of putting his foot in his mouth.
If Pakistan had won the cup & he had dedicated the victory to all those people who are slain by terrorists, what's wrong in it?-Other than putting his own life on line. Why it hurts him-if Pakistanis are not behind mumbai attack. It's like the saying "kalla yendare hegalu mutti nodida".
