Change in climate, rain pattern causing floods: Goa WRD Minister


Panaji, Jul 12 (IANS): Goa Water Resource Department Minister Subhash Shirodkar on Tuesday said that floods are being caused due to climate change, recent rain pattern and other issues.

However, the state government is taking measures to prevent floods in the state.

Responding to question of MLA Pravin Arlekar in the Assembly, WRD Minister Shirodkar said that measures are being taken to prevent flooding in Goa.

"In last two to three years due to climate change, recent rain pattern and other issues floods are taking place, however, we are taking measures," Shirodkar said.

Due to incessant rain in Goa last week, many areas from both the districts of the coastal state had flooded. Subsequently, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant had visited the flood affected areas of the state and directed the local administration, disaster relief and emergency services to take necessary actions.

Sawant had stated that the WRD department shall find and implement a permanent solution for the issue.

WRD Minister Subhash Shirodkar said that low lying areas get flooded after excess water is released from dams, however in future, measures in this regards will be taken.

Shirodkar said that "structural" and "non-structural" systems are implemented to control the floods.

He said that since last two to three years, the issue of flooding is witnessed due to several reasons.
