Panaji: Minister Apologises for Unparliamentary Language

Panaji, Mar 22 (IANS): Goa Sports Minister Babu Azgaonkar Monday apologized to the legislative assembly for using unparliamentary language during unruly scenes in the house over allegations he had misused his office.

Azgaonkar's apology came after unruly scenes in the assembly during Question Hour, after opposition and ruling legislators accused the minister of permitting hospitality projects through the backdoor, in guise of the National Games 2014.

Legislators from the ruling and opposition benches almost exchanged blows, when they stormed the well of the House, after Azgaonkar vehemently criticized opposition member Manohar Parrikar in unparliamentary language.

The assembly marshals had to physically intervene to stop legislators from both sides from assaulting each other.

"I have a habit to talk straight and in the fit of anger, I uttered few words for which I apologise to the House," the sports minister said.

Chief Minister Digambar Kamat said the fracas was unfortunate.

"The Goa assembly has always set an example for the country. Whatever differences we are having, still we have maintained the decorum here," said the chief minister, who is leader of the House.

Speaker Pratapsing Rane called the incident "regrettable".
