Udupi, June 20: “Social media is an amazing tool. We will succeed if we learn the skill to use it,” said veteran journalist M S Raghavendra. He was speaking at a state-level workshop on ‘opportunities in new media’ held jointly by the journalism welfare committee of the MGM College journalism department and the internal quality assurance cell (I.Q.A.C.) on Monday, June 20.

“Social media helped Barack Obama to win the US presidential elections for the second time. Social media played an important role in the recent farmers’ protests in New Delhi. Social media has transformed itself as an effective tool. Valuable opinions can be made to reach people using them,” he said.

“We should not lose the value of subjects in our efforts to increase the number of views on YouTube and Facebook. The value drops if we go after the number of views. The content should be made ready by understanding the category of viewers. Our value and the income will be intact if we do it,” he said.

Kaup’s Shutter box film’s Sachin S Shetty spoke about various contents, author Manasi Sudheer spoke about ‘literature in social media – my experience’, narrator Shameera Beluvayi spoke about opportunities as high as the sky and background voice artiste Badakkila Pradeep spoke on how to be the lord of the sound world.

MGM College journalism course third year students inaugurated the workshop by displaying in a unique way the homepage of Mangaluru Samachara newspaper.

MGM College Principal Dr Devidas Naik, journalism department head Manjunath Kamath and journalism department professor Suchith Kotian were present.
