Udupi, Mar 12: The MPs of Udupi-Chikmagalur, Shimoga and Canara constituency D V Sadananda Gowda and B Y Raghavendra, who accompanied the delegation led by Areca Growers' Marketing Society requested to defer ban of the plastic sachet for the sale of guthka until an alternate arrangement to pack the guthka for sale is made.
The duo appraised minister for law M Veerappa Moily on problems faced by the areca growers due to the ban on palstic sachet to sell guthka.
D V and Raghavendra who met the minister on Friday March 11 requested Moily to work towards mitigating the problems faced by the areca growers, who are about 25 lac in number in about ten states that grow areca as primary crops. They said that after the enforcement of the ban there was a drop by Rs 4,000 per quintal of areca. Further, purchasers are shying away from buying areca from the growers, which has increased their woes, they added.
