Mangaluru, Jan 16: In a remarkable medical achievement, KMC Hospital, Dr B R Ambedkar Circle, has successfully performed a non-surgical PDA (Patent Ductus Arteriosus) device closure on a 4-month-old infant weighing just 4 kgs. The baby had been turned away by another hospital due to her low weight, which presented significant challenges for both surgery and anaesthesia. This ground-breaking procedure is a testament to KMC Hospital's expertise and commitment to providing advanced care for even the most vulnerable patients.
The infant, who had been suffering from recurrent respiratory infections, was offered a non-surgical PDA closure as a solution. The procedure was led by renowned cardiologist, Dr Padmanabha Kamath, who was supported by a skilled team of anaesthesiologists and cath lab technicians. Despite the technical difficulties posed by the child’s low weight, the team performed the procedure with remarkable precision and care.

"This case was unique because of the infant’s weight," said Dr Padmanabha Kamath, senior interventional cardiologist at KMC Hospital, Dr B R Ambedkar Circle, Mangaluru. "Performing the closure required not only advanced expertise but also seamless teamwork across specialties. We’re thrilled to give this little one a new lease on life and ensure she can grow up healthy and strong."
The success of the procedure underscores the hospital's commitment to offering innovative, life-saving treatments in the face of complex medical challenges. PDA closure, a procedure traditionally requiring surgery, can now be done non-surgically, thanks to advances in medical technology, offering a safer and less invasive option for infants.
“We are proud to have been able to offer this state-of-the-art treatment to such a young patient. It reflects our hospital’s dedication to providing the best care, especially in critical cases,” said Saghir Siddiqui, regional COO, KMC Hospital, Dr B R Ambedkar Circle, Mangaluru. “Our team’s expertise and ability to adapt to challenging circumstances have made this achievement possible.”
KMC Hospital continues to be a beacon of hope for patients in need of advanced, life-saving medical interventions, offering hope and healing to those in even the most difficult situations.
