Mangaluru, Jun 15: St Aloysius PU College Mangaluru, organized an orientation programme for the newly admitted students of I PUC on June 13. More than 2,000 students attended the orientation programme organised separately for Science, Commerce and Arts streams.
Sandra Lobo, associate professor, head of the Psychology Department, School of Social Work, Roshini Nilaya inaugurated the academic year and motivated the students on the occasion. The programme commenced with a warm welcome to the students and a solemn inter-religious prayer session by the II PUC students. Principal Fr Clifford Sequeira SJ, welcomed all the dignitaries and the newly admitted I PU students. In his message to all the students, he stressed that college life is an important phase in life and hence the students must use their time wisely, be systematic, sincere and hard working. He also encouraged the students to make use of opportunities and nurture their talents so that it will help them to become balanced individuals. He further said that we celebrate diversity in this campus and therefore respecting each other, growing in understanding and appreciating religious traditions would help us become men and women for and with others. Lastly, Fr Clifford enumerated the three tips of success. “First, read something, which no else is reading. Second, think something no one else is thinking about and that will make you creative thinkers and third, do something that no one else is doing and this way it will help you to contribute for the well-being of the society,” he said.
The resource person, Sandra Lobo, appreciated the solemn prayer service and congratulated the students on choosing one of the best colleges in the city. She told the students, “Your life does not get better by chance, it gets better by change.” She encapsulated the need to open up the thoughts, words and speech. She said that we need to unmute and unmask ourselves and we need to put forward our real self. She also motivated the students to learn and relearn and wished the students the best for the academic year ahead.
Vice principal for Science, Muralikrishna G M and the dean for Science, Kiran Shetty, Vidyalaxmi R, co-convener were also present on the occasion. Manasa, department of Physics, convener of the orientation programme for Science students proposed the vote of thanks. Deepthi Rani M K, department of English compered the programme.
The resource person for the orientation session for Commerce and Arts students was Dr Supriya Hegde Aroor. She is the professor and the head, department of Psychiatry, Fr Muller Medical College, Mangaluru. Speaking on the occasion, she congratulated the students for having reached this far because as per Indian statistics about 47million students drop out after class 10. She encouraged the students to use their time to shape their personality, enrol themselves in co-curricular and extracurricular activities along with academics. Dr Hegde also motivated the students to focus on what they want and work to achieve it. She advised them to manage distractions, be motivated always, compartmentalise their lives and express love and gratitude to everyone who has contributed towards their growth.
The students were familiarized with the campus through a video presentation before the programme. Vice principal for Commerce and Arts Charlotte D’Souza and the dean for Commerce and Arts Dr Pradeep M, Archana, department of Hindi, co-convener were also present on the dais.
Diana Dias, department of English, the convener of the orientation programme for Commerce and Arts students proposed the vote of thanks. Sophronia G Maben, department of English, compered the programme.
