Puttur, Jun 14: A railway overbridge, which was built for the convenience of the public, has become a threat to the lives of vehicle riders and drivers.
The new overbridge was built by the Indian Railways at Mura in the taluk. This is built across the road that connects Mangaluru-Bengaluru national highway with the Mani-Mysuru state highway via Kedila.
Hundreds of people ply on this road everyday. Because of the railway crossing, they had to wait for a long time in the queue when the trains passed through. So they had demanded an overbridge many years ago which was eventually built. However, it was constructed in an unscientific manner by making the path zig zag instead of the earlier one which was straight.
In order to prevent the eviction of shops by the roadside during over bridge construction, the road was made zig zag. This is posing a serious threat to the drivers as they cannot see the oncoming vehicles. During the night, it is even more dangerous as there is a 50 feet deep gorge just by the side of the overbridge.
At the end of the road if one assumes that the road goes further and moves, they could fall to death from 50 feet height. It is ironic that the overbridge which was built spending crores of rupees has become a life threat instead of easing the lives of the public.
Locals suggest that only a retention wall by the side of the overbridge can prevent mishaps. They have urged the authorities to look into the matter immediately before any injury or loss of life occurs.
