New Delhi, March 10 (IANS) As many as 8,701 cases of trafficking of women and children were registered under the Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act over a period of three years, Women and Child Development Minister Krishna Tirath said Thursday.
Quoting National Crime Records Bureau data, Tirath said that 3,568 such cases were recorded across the country in 2007, 2,659 in 2008, and 2,474 in 2009.
"The ministry has been implementing the Ujjawala scheme, under which financial assistance is being provided for prevention of trafficking and for rescue, rehabilitation and re-integration of victims of trafficking for commercial sexual exploitation," Tirath informed the Rajya Sabha.
"Trainings are organised for civil society organisations as well for sensitisation of law enforcement agencies," she added.
