Mangalore, Mar 8: On the day as women raise their demand for more rights and freedom, MP Nalin Kumar Kateel asserted that yet more freedom for women is illogical. More freedom may lead to unmanageable behaviour among women, he reasoned. He also said that it may also mess up the rich culture of our country.

He was speaking after inaugurating the International Women’s Day organized under the joint auspices of Dakshina Kannada zilla panchayat, department of women and child development, District Legal Services Authority, District Federation of Mahila Mandals and Karnataka State Commission for Women at Town Hall here on Tuesday March 8.

Pointing out about the vedic period, he said women in our country enjoyed greater respect and veneration unlike other western countries. He denied the argument that more freedom for women will improve their status and said that letting women do whatever they want in the name of freedom is not our culture. The MP suggested the gathering to consider the International Women’s Day as an occasion to discuss how to preserve and promote Indian culture.

Shakuntala A, deputy director, department of women and child development, Mangalore welcomed the gathering and delivered the introductory address. Zilla panchayat president K T Shailaja Bhat presided.

ZPvice-president Dhanalakshmi Janardana D, gynaecologist Dr Rathidevi and Federation of Mahila Mandals president Premalatha Rao among others were present.

A book ‘Nisargadatta Ahara’ compiled by Vidya Nayak was released on the occasion.

Ramesh Poojari - I dont think he meant that too much of freedom is given to women. People who comment about equality will only bark ,but will not allow their wife, sister, daughter or mother to smoke or drink in open the same way guys do!! They will say thats bad and not good for them . Will you allow your wife to drink in an bar in open or smoke??? If YES, then you every right to comment about freedom and equality.

Dear Ramesh Poojari, The crowd was calm only because they heard the full speach instead of 'cut and past' of seleted parts of the speech. They did not react to one sentence like you. You are drawing conclusions from one of two sentences from the speech without listening to the full speech and taking the entire speech in context.

Indian culture may be adoring the
women as " Goddess " but in the
    families and streets, they are
    treated differently. Let us stop
this great " culture talk " and
be realistic to solve the problem
of mistreatment of girls and women
in the society. Talk has no
value until it is put into
    action.
