Mangalore, Mar 5: Veteran leader and former union minister, Oscar Fernandes, has been appointed as the general secretary of All India Congress Committee (AICC). At the same time, another leader from the coast and former MP, Vinayakumar Sorake, has been made the AICC secretary. These appointments were made on Friday March 4.
Oscar, who entered politics by getting elected as a councillor of Udupi Municipal Corporation in 1971, has worked in almost all the organizational positions in the party. Since 1980, he represented Udupi Lok Sabha constituency five times, and got elected thrice to Rajya Sabha from the state. He was conferred honorary doctorate by Mangalore University. He has worked as the president of Udupi Auto Riskchaw Owners and Drivers Association, besides various committees, sugar factory, KPCC, etc. In the past too, he had discharged duty as AICC general secretary.
Sorake, who has mass following in Udupi, Puttur and Mangalore regions, has got this responsibility for the first time. Sorake was Puttur MLA from 1985 to 1995. He got elected as a member of parliament from Udupi constituency in 1999. He has worked as NSUI state president, joint secretary of All India Youth Congress Committee, and as the general secretary of KPCC thrice. Till recently, he was a director of Syndicate Bank. Sorake continues to be active in serving the people, and he has offices in Udupi and Mangalore, where he has been trying to help the people in various ways.
At the same time, union minister, Mallikarjun Kharge, has been dropped from Congress Working Committee, while Veerappa Moily has been taken out of AICC committee. In place of Ghulam Nabi Azad, Madhusudan Mistry frorm Gujarat will be in charge of Congress party affairs in the state. These changes were made under ‘one person one post’ formula adopted by the party.
