Mangalore, Feb 28: “Karnataka has performed high in education sector. It has emerged as the knowledge hub of Asia,” said state higher education minister, Dr V S Acharya. He was speaking after participating as the chief guest at the convocation of Karavali Group of Colleges here, and handing over degree certificates to the graduates, on Sunday February 27.
“Human resources play a very important role in the process of development. As such, our state has been laying added emphasis on enrichment of human resources. We have earmarked a sum of Rs 12,284 crore for education in the budget,” he claimed. Acharya also said that the state plans to double the number of students in classes below degree and also the degree classes, within the next ten years.
He appreciated the achievements of Karavali Group of Colleges during 15 years since its inception, and hailed Ganesh Rao, founder of the colleges, for his contribution to the field of education.
Mangalore University vice-chancellor, Prof T C Shivashankara Murthy, who was the other chief guest, said that good education is the best gift the parents can give to their children. Noting that education is a perennial process, he urged the youth to crave for achieving further. He thanked the higher education minister for providing additional grants for the study centre of the university in Madikeri.
Ganesh Rao, president of G R Education Trust, which manages these colleges, felt that advancement of knowledge should be a continuing process.
Deputy chairman of Karnataka government’s NRI Cell, Ganesh Karnik, participated as guest. Directors of the group, Lata G Rao and M Venkat Rao, as well as principals of different colleges were present.
