Madikeri, Feb 26: The policemen resorted to caning of the miscreants, after they pelted stones at two shops in the town on Friday February 25 evening, even when prohibitory orders were in force.
It may be recalled that some miscreants, during the Hindu Samajotsava procession taken out on Thursday, had thrown stones at a few shops belonging to a particular community, flaring up the tempers of the concerned.
After two miscreants threw stones at a shop in Mahadevpet in the town on Friday, activists of an organization came together and blocked the road, in protest against the incident. The policemen lathi-charged the protestors, and dispersed them. The protestors then congregated in front of the town police station. Under the instructions of the deputy superintendent of police, they were dispersed by caning them.
A medical shop on College Road, and a house in Mahadevapet also came under attack. The policemen went around the town later, and wielded lathis wherever they sighted miscreants.
For controlling the situation, the prohibitory orders within the town limit have been extended till February 28 evening. On Saturday, schools and colleges will remain closed, but PU examinations will be held as scheduled.
The newly formed Kodagu District Muslim Welfare Forum had decided to take out a procession at 3 pm on Friday to the office of the deputy commissioner to hand over a memorandum. District deputy commissioner, Ashwathnarayana Gowda, considering the likely fall out of this step, had clamped prohibitory orders.
