Mangalore, Feb 24: Various places in the twin-districts like Mulky, Suratkal, Kinnigoly, Kateel and surrounding places apart from several other places in Beltangady and Karkala taluks, received good rains in the early hours on Wednesday February 23. Overcast skies coupled with lightning and rains were experienced in Subrahmanya and Yenekal regions on Wednesday evening.
In some places, the areca nuts, harvested and laid out in the courtyards for drying, were either soaked in water or washed away due to the untimely rains. The farmers, whose areca nuts have been dampened, cannot wait for long for prices to rise, as their produce will get spoilt at an early date. The rains also will, in all probability, effect the cashew nut and mango harvests. Experts have already predicted poor cashew nut crop in the region this year, because of diseases and low pattern of flowering. If the rains continue, prices of these products will come down drastically.
On Wednesday, Somwarpet in Kodagu district also got good rains. People as well as students, who did not expect rains, were drenched in rain. Several other districts also received rains, with Mulbagil taluk in Kolar district registering the heaviest rain in the state.
The meteorological department has predicted scattered to fairly widespread, moderate to rather heavy rainfall in many parts of south interior Karnataka, in the next 24 hours.
