Udupi, Feb 23: Shirtady William Pinto a well known social worker and a senior advocate was honoured at Byndoor, Nithyadhar Nagar, here recently.
He was honoured on the occasion of decennial year celebration of St Thomas Residential Central English Medium High School by Dr Geevarghese Mar Divannasious, bishop of Puttur diocese.
The felicitation was an acknowledgement of his commitment to public cause and service to tenants, landless peasants especially in 1974 when revolutionary Land Reforms Act was passed by Government of Karnataka and in 1986 when panchayath 3 tier system decentralization of power, providing power to the rural masses.
Besides social commitment, he has written several books and articles in simple language, hundreds of speeches in Kannada, Tulu and Konkani languages, including huge number of radio speeches which speak for the deprived sections of society.
He has received several awards including Karnataka Rajyotsav award in 2004, Sandesha Special award in 1996, Rachana Professional of the Year 2003, Life Time Achievement award 2007.
He has also won the best book award in 2007 from the Konkani Sahithya Academy for his ‘Kaanun Darshan’, the first law book in Konkani containing laws, rules, and legal remedies that are essential to common people in their day to day life, which saw its sixth edition within a short period creating a record in Konkani language.
