Puttur, Jan 28: State energy, food and civil supplies minister, Shobha Karandlaje, said that the government plans to issue new ration cards for identifying genuine families falling below poverty line (BPL). “To obviate the generation of fake ration cards, house numbers will be mentioned in cards issued within gram panchayat and municipal limits, while in cities, RR numbers of electricity meters will be mentioned,” she said.
Speaking to reporters here on Tuesday January 27, Shobha said that as against 1.25 crore families existing in the state, 1.50 crore ration cards have been distributed. She explained that the fake ration cards will get automatically cancelled, and only the genuine ones will be retained. Giving the example of a village in Dharwad district, she said the number of ration cards issued there was 275, as against 150 families residing there.
She reiterated that to meet the demand for power during this summer, hydel power generation will be increased and exuded confidence that the state will be able to supply uninterrupted power from January to May. She said that towards achieving better efficiency in electricity distribution, thrust has been given for a coordinated approach between Karnataka Power Corporation and Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Ltd. She added that the government will permit private parties to set up minor hydel power plants with a capacity up to upto 25 mega watts.
