Mangaluru, Mar 3: The city police are in the hot pursuit of the people running the drug cartel that mainly targets the young student community. The fact that the drug menace has proliferated in the region is proved by the fact that 517 drug rackets were busted by the police in two years.
Under the jurisdiction of the city commissionerate, 189 cases were registered in 2020 and 354 were arrested. In the year 2021, 328 cases were registered and 495 were arrested. In these 189 cases, 203.964 kg ganja, 62 grams of MDMA, 26.850 grams of ganja oil, ten LSD sheets and 103 grams of MDMA powder were seized.

In the 328 cases pertaining to 2021, 334.383 grams of ganja, 313 grams of MDMA, 21 grams of cocaine, 750 grams of heroin, and 840 LSD were seized. The value of these drugs has been estimated at 1.26 crore.
The police have so far found through their probe that the students are the main targets of the traffickers and the city with its teeming crowd of students presents a lucrative market for drug sellers. Some are also able to buy drugs online, the police say. The drugs racket has spread its wings in a big way in medical and professional education colleges. The police commissionerate has already organized parade of drugs case accused in a bid to discourage the drugs abuse. The police have been trying to reach to the bottom of the racket and arrest everyone concerned, says city law and order deputy commissioner of police, Hariram Shankar.
