Udupi: Lokayukta Worried Over Draining Away of Government Funds

Daijiworld Media Network – Udupi (SP)

Udupi, Jan 10: “In 1985, the then Prime Minister had estimated that only 15 paise out of every rupee spent by the government was reaching the beneficiaries. I doubt whether even one paisa out of every rupee spent by the government is reaching the people now. No one has made efforts to find out how the remaining money gets drained away, and how to ensure that the entire money gets spent for the purpose for which it was meant,” commented state Lokayukta, Justice Santosh Hegde.

He was interacting with the students in a programme organised at Shamili Hall here on Saturday January 8. The students movement programme had been organized by Janajagruti Vedike. Hegde blamed the present-day governments of derailing the entire process of justice by giving reasons for not holding investigations. He pointed out that both the ruling government and the opposition at the centre have been derailing the process of investigation relating to 2G spectrum scam by sticking to their respective stands on investigation by Public Accounts Committee and Joint Parliamentary Committee.

Hegde said that leaders and the society were to be equally blamed for the ominous growth of corruption during six decades after independence in the India. “Riches, which get amassed by corrupt and greedy people, get glamourized. Our goal should be to achieve social transformation through the determined youth,” he felt.

As questions got tossed him incessantly, Hegde asked the students to send their questions through SMS to his mobile phone No. 9845000022 or by mail to nsantosh_hegde@yahoo.in.

Directrof of the State PU Education Board, Chakravarti Mohan, who inaugurated the programme, said that only those who admit that there is corruption can ably fight against this menace. He exhorted students to go forward without fear and favour, and to work with conviction about values, towards the goal of transparent administration.

Senior honorary president of Janajagruti Vedike and retired teacher, M Krishna Adiga, was felicitated on this occasion. K C Rajesh presented the programme. Chief organizer of the Vedike, Vijayanath Hegde, delivered introductory address.
