Mangaluru, Feb 28: Dakshina Kannada district has become notorious because of the frequent incidents of communal clashes happening here. However, these incidents have been happening as isolated cases most of the time but because of the publicity these incidents get, the district appears to outsiders as being in turmoil perpetually.
Even though apparently there is division on communal lines in general, this does not prevent the people from these two religions from working, supporting, and helping one another. People from these faiths voluntarily take part in the festivals of the others.
Uroos of Ullal Hazarat Sayyid Muhammed Sharifulla Madani Dargah, popularly known as Ullal Dargah, stands as testimony for the mutual support these communities extend to each other in times of need. Ullal Dargah is located a small distance away from Cheerumba Bhagawathi and Vaidyanath temples. The managements of these two temples are aware of the problems faced by the devotees thronging the Uroos. Therefore they allow the vehicles of the devotees coming to the Uroos to be parked in their parking lots. The Ullal Dargah which began on February 10 this year, will end on March 5.
Vice president of Cheerumba Bhagawathi Thiya Samaja Seva Sangh, Sadashiva Ullal, says that the Dargah Committee also extends similar facility during the temple festivals like Nadavali and Navaratri. He says that the two centres have harmonious relationship with each other.
The Koragajja Daivasthana near the flyover on national highway at Thokottu too has postponed its annual festival taking into account the fact that Uroos dates clash with the festival date. President of Koragajja Seva Samiti, Mohandas Kapikad, says that the devotees of both the places have maintained cordial relationship, and U T Khader has always been supporting the festivals and other functions of the Daivasthana. He said that as thousands of devotees flock the Uroos, the roads overflow with people. Because of this, the Daivasthana Samiti decided to postpone the annual festival, he explained.
Ullal Dargah Samithi president Haji Abdul Rasheed, said that the temples in the area and Mogaveera Samaj have always supported the Uroos, and the Dargah committee too allots land for vendors from different communities to establish their shops at the Uroos. This Uroos is held once in five years and this time, it is held with two years delay because of the covid19 pandemic.
