Kundapur, Dec 17: In an incident that occurred on Thursday December 16, which appears to be having its roots in the disturbances that rocked the city on Sunday December 12, miscreants torched a shop in Kody within the municipal limits. The incident, which has occurred at a time when the time had returned to complete normalcy, has shaken the policemen and other officials alike.
The provisions-cum-ice cream shop owned by Gajendra Kamath, located by the side of Kody bus stand, was set on fire. The trouble mongers poured kerosene at the front entrance to the shop, and then started fire. The front portion of the shop was gutted, and vegetables, provisions, and crates with soft drink bottles in them, were seen to have been burnt down. A major tragedy was averted as the fire got extinguished on its own before spreading to other parts of the shop.
The owner came to know about the incident only when he came to open his shop in the morning. A can, cigarette lighters, and footwear were found at the incident spot. It is suspected that anti-social elements, which want to encash law and order problem to their advantage, had executed this plan.
District superintendent of police (SP), Pravin Madhukar Pawar, additional superintendent of police, Ram Nivas Sapat, local sub-divisional officer, Sadashiva Prabhu, circle police inspector, Madan Gaonkar, and others visited the spot. The things found at the spot were taken away by the policemen. Loss in the incident is being assessed. Additional policemen were deployed in the town, Kody, Gangolli and Kandlur in the taluk, by drawing Central Reserve Police Force personnel, and night patrolling has been intensified. A peace meeting under the presidentship of the SP was organized in the city on Thursday.
