Guangzhou, Nov 23 (IANS) Somdev Devvarman clinched the historic gold medal for India in men's singles tennis by beating top-seed Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan at the Asian Games here Tuesday.
In the title clash, which lasted one hour 22 minutes, at the Aoti Tennis Stadium, second seeded Somdev won 6-1, 6-2 for his second gold medal in the Asian Games.
Somdev's singles gold was the seventh that also took India to the seventh spot in the medal's table.
In the singles semi-final, Somdev beat fourth seeded Tatsuma Ito of Japan 6-2, 0-6, 6-3.
Somdev partnered Sanam Singh to win the gold medal in the men's doubles Monday.
