Mangalore, Nov 18: Jerome Sequeira (79), a citizen of Switzerland, reportedly ended life by jumping into a hotel well late night on Tuesday November 16. Jerome, who, it is gathered, used to suffer from high blood pressure and loss of memory, and his body was found floating in the well on Wednesday.

On November 16, Jerome and his wife, Magrel Sequiera, had hired a room in Gateway Hotel in the city. The room had been booked till November 18.

On Wednesday morning, the body of Jerome, who is originally from Kinnigoly, but migrated to Switzerland for a job when young, and secured citizenship of that country later, was found floating in the well. Jerome had later married a citizen of that country. Out of the three children of the couple, two are in Switzerland, while the third one is in USA.

It is said, the couple returned to their room after visiting a few relatives in Kinnigoly on Tuesday evening. Jerome, who woke up at around 1.40 pm, went out of the room, telling his wife that he wanted to go for a walk. The closed circuit cameras in the hotel showed him going out of the hotel through its exit.

Post mortem of the body was conducted in the government Wenlock Hospital here. His body has been kept in the mortuary of the said hospital. A case has been registered in this connection, in Pandeshwar police station.

An interesting story if it were true. There are several falsehoods in this report. Firstly Jerome Sequeira did not suffer from high blood pressure or loss of memory as release of his medical records here confirms. His wife is called Margrit, not Magrel which does not exist as a first name. Jerome had too much to look forward to, was too happy and a devout Catholic that the idea of committing suicide is preposterous.

Then there are unanswered questions: Why was the well not properly covered up - a low wall and flimsy netting to prevent leaves is surely not enough to stop an elderly man stumbling through? Would we suggest suicide if a small child had fallen in the well? And what was the night watchman doing while the video was recording? Why was there no alarm on the fire exit? Perhaps the hotel has a case to answer to and a smear campaign against an old man proves convenient?

Very sad death indeed.Heart-felt condolences to the bereaved family. It is ironical that he had to come all the way from Switzerland to the Mangalore Gateway Hotel to find a well to end his life. It's also strange that the CCTV's are used as a piece of evidence, hours after the incidents have taken place.IT'S A PRE POST-MORTEM.
