Mangalore, Nov 17: A 19-year-old female having rare congenital anomaly, Total Anamalous Pulmonary Venous Connection (TAPVC) was operated successfully by cardiothoracic team of A J Hospital & Research Centre, recently
Patient had rare problem wherein all oxygenated blood from lungs carried by pulmonary veins opened to right atrium with rudimentary atrium associated with hole in the atrium (ASD). All the pulmonary veins were rerouted surgically to the newly created left atrium followed by closure of hole (ASD). Operation went uneventful. Patient discharged from hospital healthy and now devoid of symptoms.
Meanwhile, a 53-year-old male presented with recurrent chest pain and who also underwent Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG) for the same complaint in a private hospital in Bangalore three years back, followed by stent placed (angioplasty) to same vessel a year later was also operated successfully.
Repeat Angiogram done at A J Hospital & Research Centre showed re-occlusion of graft and stent and block in 3 other major vessels. He needed re-CABG (open heart surgery), which carried high risk due to increased bleeding, invisibility of the graftable vessels due to adhesions and chance of going for low cardiac output syndrome.
Patient was taken for surgery with explained graded risk and all the four major vessels were grafted successfully on Cardio Pulmonary Bypass. Post-operative period was uneventful.
