Udupi: Dr Alva Stresses Need to Safeguard Mother Tongue From Distortion

Udupi, Nov 16: “One should not disregard his or her mother tongue due to the lure of English.  Culture gets its sustenance from respecting the mother tongue,” said Dr M Mohan Alva, chairman, Alva's Education Foundation. 

He was speaking after inaugurating the district-level multi-lingual poetry session held at SVS Pre-University College auditorium, Katpady, near here, on Sunday November 14.  It was organized under the aegis of the Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy and district Kambala Kala Sahitya Vedike. 

“The life of the youth is in jeopardy as a consequence of their lack of interest in pursuing the cause of their mother land, mother tongue, and also cultural hierarchy”, added Dr Alva. 

Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy president Narayan Kharvi Kundapur, in his presidential address, said that multi-lingual poetry sessions provide opportunities to know the finer aspects of each other’s literature besides promoting cordial relations in the society.  

Katpady entrepreneur K Satyendra Pai, Manipal Narasinge Temple managing trustee Ramesh Salvankar, district Kambala Kala Vedike honorary president Dr U K Shetty, and Katpady Rotary Club president Raviraj Shetty were the chief guests on the occasion.  

Dr Alva inaugurated a fine arts exhibition organized by Udupi Artists’ Court on the same occasion.   

Artists’ Court president Ramesh Kidiyoor, artists P R Bhat and P N Acharya were present. 

Konkani poet Catherine Rodrigues Katpady chaired the multi-lingual poetry session. 

Multi-lingual poets Poornima Nayak Udupi, Maurice D’Sa Shanthipura, Ennehole Sadanand Nayak Karkala, Subramanya G Kurya Udupi, Shailaja Hegde Karkala, Kathyayini Kunjibettu, Rohini Katpady, Suresh Yermal, Rakesh Kunjoor, Hussein Katipalla, Anwar Majoor and Hussainar participated in the poetry session. 

The district Kambala Kala Vedike president Prakash Suvarna Katpady welcomed the gathering.  Vice-president and Konkani Sahitya Academy member Pundalika Marate compered the programme.  Konkani Sahitya Academy registrar S H Shivarudrappa delivered the introductory address while Nagesh Nayak proposed the vote of thanks.
