Bangalore, Nov 9: Finally, the date is set for holding the World Kannada Conference in Belgaum. The long-delayed three-day event would be held from February 25, 2011.
Karnataka’s Higher Education Dr V S Acharya and Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister S Suresh Kumar, who briefed reporters after a meeting of the State Cabinet, said the much delayed World Kannada meet would be held in Belgaum from February 25.
The State Government has set aside a sum of Rs. 30 crore has been set aside for holding the meet on a grand scale on the border town, they said.
The Kannada summit has been postponed several times for one or the other reason.
DK, Udupi under Shimoga UAS
The Cabinet has decided to bring Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Shimoga, Hassan, Chikmagalur, Chitradurga and Davangere districts under the jurisdiction of the University of Agricultural Sciences, Shimoga.
A sum of Rs. 10 crore has been set aside to set up the varsity. All these districts now fall under the jurisdiction of Univeristy of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore.
The UAS, Shimoga, would cover education in both horticultural and agricultural crops, research and extension, they said.
A decision has been taken to release Rs. 50 crore for 100 government first grade colleges which have been identified to commence sciences.
For each college, a sum of Rs. 10 lac would be allocated for library, Rs, 15 lac for laboratory, Rs. 5 lac for equipment, Rs. 5 lac for computers, Rs. 10 lac to start PG courses and Rs. 5 lac education of SCs and STs, they said.
The Cabinet has decided to provide grants for 10 teaching staff and two non-teaching staff of a 94 year old music school run by musician late Puttaraju Gawai in Gadag. It would cost Rs. 12.80 lac per state exchequer per year.
Srinivas Institute of Medical Sciences in Mangalore
The ministers said the Cabinet has cleared a proposal to open a Srinivas Institute of Medical Sciences, Mangalore, from the coming academic year (2011-12).
The approval was required for seeking clearance from the Medical Council of India.
To expedite the implementation of the housing projects in urban areas, the Cabinet has decided to provide 40 per cent of the developed area to land owners in residential layouts. The Karnataka Housing Board would develop the layouts.
The State Cabinet has decided to release the State share of Rs. 240 corre for laying the railway line from Tumkur to Rayadurga. The estimated cost of the five year project is Rs. 1057 crore.
It also decided to set up planning units in 43 backward taluks to ensure effective implementation of various development programmes of the Government. The Nanjundappa panel has identified 114 backward taluks in the State.
