Mangaluru, Oct 30: The city corporation has hung QR codes to all the houses, apartments, shops etc in all the wards within the city corporation. These QR codes are scanned at the time of garbage collection. The officials can keep tab on whether the garbage collectors are covering all the bins. But it is learnt that most of these QR codes are not being scanned as of now.
Garbage is collected on a daily basis in the city. In order to strike coordination between the city corporation and the smart city, QR codes have been pasted to about 68,000 buildings here. The civic workers have been given mobile devices which have ward-wise information, for scanning. It works within the wards concerned. The civic workers are expected to scan the QR codes of buildings when they visit them each day. But it is noted that the civic workers are given change of areas for garbage collection on certain days. They are then unable to scan the code when they are in wards other than their own. As such, only information about 1,500 buildings reach the smart city command control room.
In course of time, the QR codes system which have been made ward-wise, are planned to be brought within Mangaluru north and south constituencies. As the area widens, the workers will be able to scan the code anywhere in the city. The officials said that the technical faults now encountered are being addressed and a hundred devices will be supplied to civic workers in south and north wards.
These QR codes have been pasted to the compounds of houses, hotels, apartment complexes, stalls, industries etc. /the civic workers have devices to scan these codes. They scan the codes when collecting garbage from the respective buildings. The signals reach the integrated command control of the smart city. If the QR codes of some buildings are not scanned, it is construed that garbage from here has not been collected and this information reaches corporation officials.
Arun Prabha, general manager, Mangaluru Smart City Ltd, says that some QR codes were not getting scanned because of technical problems, and that the process of addressing this problem is on and now almost all the devices are working.
