Chikkamagaluru, Oct 29: A man who murdered his daughter, then tried to commit suicide. This incident happened near the railway gate on B H Road in Birur town in the district. The decreased was Radha (18).

Chandrappa from Kenchinakoppa, Shikaripur, is the murder accused. Radha had fallen in love with a youth from her town. Her father opposed this alliance and had warned her to sever all links with the boy. The girl was not convinced. He thought that keeping the lovers away from each other can break their closeness. Therefore he sent his daughter to the house of his elder sister in Channagiri.

To take his daughter to participate in the village fair, he went to Channagiri in his motorbike to pick her. On the way home he tried to convince her to change her mind and desert the boy. But the girl stayed adamant on marrying the boy. This angered Chandrappa so much that on reaching near the railway gate where there was no movement of people, he tightened the veil of his daughter around her neck and smothered her to death. He then kept the body in a pit nearby and returned home.

On reaching home he explained to his family what had happened, and tried to end his life by hanging himself. The family members succeeded in saving his life. The police have since arrested Chandrappa.
