Udupi, Oct 23: The Model United Nations Summit Manipal 2010 started on Friday October 23 with the opening ceremony taking place at A/C Seminar Hall, Block 2, MIT.
Prof M D Nalapat, director, geopolitics department, UN Peace Chair, Manipal University and Dr M V Kamath, honorary director, Manipal Institute of Communication were the chief guests of the event.
The MUN Summit has gone big this year with it attracting over 500 applications for the 200 delegate seats. “This time the applications included entries from countries like Singapore, Bangladesh, Negeria and Pakistan”, said Mr. Abishek Rajan, Presiden of MUN.
MUN is a simulation of six councils of the United Nations namely, Security Council, General Assembly, Human Rights Council, Legal Committee, International Atomic Energy Agency and Crisis Committee.
Speaking on the occasion Prof M D Nalapat said, “MUN is an international summit and I urge all the delegates and participants to put aside the idea of which country they belong to and present themselves as international citizens”. “If the resolutions that are passed during the event are worth considering and make sagacity, we would like to take them to national or say international level for that matter”, he added.
Gracing the occasion Dr M V Kamath spoke on the ways the UN had failed to be an international organization and how the powers had been restricted in the hands of a few white nations. He came up with the concept of building United Nations in every continent.
The next two days will see the presentations of various delegates on different issues who will present themselves in various councils. The Delegates have been assigned countries over ten days back and have extensively prepared for the parliamentary form of debate to be held here.
Dr G K Prabhu (registrar, Manipal University) and Dr Kumkum Garg (director, MIT Manipal) were also present for the opening ceremony.
