Beltangady, Oct 22: “The media in Dakshina Kannada is known for dischargeing their duties responsibly and have contributed significantly in addressing various issues”, said Professor Vigneshwar Bhat.

He was speaking at the inaugural of a two-day UGC-sponsored national symposium on ‘Is politics more powerful than media? Does politics control media?’ It was organized by the post graduation department of mass communication and journalism, SDM College, Ujire, near here, on Friday October 22.

Professor K V Nagaraj, head, department of journalism, Assam University, presided.

Prof Nagaraj said that the media should report trustworthy news and be a role model to the society.

SDM College principal Dr B Yasho Varma said that the media is capable of turning politics on to the right path.

SDM College dean Professor J Mahaveer and Press Club president Pushparaj Shetty were the chief guests on the occasion.

Professor Bhaskar Hegde, head, department of mass communications and journalism, SDM College, welcomed the gathering. Sudarshan and Jayalaxmi compered the programme.

‘Chiguru Nudi Chitra’, the students’ bulletin, was released on the same occasion.
