Mangaluru, Sep 25: Dr Jalaluddin Akbar, Head of Surgical Oncology Department has informed that for the first time in India, the Department of Surgical Oncology at Yenepoya Medical College Hospital has carried out a major resection of the right chest with part of lung and reconstruction.
Addressing a press meet at press club here on Saturday, September 25, Jalaluddin Akbar said, " The recurrent chest wall tumour in young patient lasted for more than 13 hours. Shwetha(33) was suffering from congenital disability know as MAFUCCI syndrome causing spine deformity and bone tumours and vascular lesions."
For her deformity, the patient had undergone 6 surgeries at Coimbatore. She developed cancer in 2019 June for which surgery two times at Ganga hospital. For same cancer in 2012, she was operated at MVY hospital and radiation was given. As the tumour recurred again the for which the MVR hospital were not willing to treat further and the patient was referred to TATA Memorial Hospital, Mumbai, he said.
At TATA also patient was informed surgery was not possible and sent back as its major and challenging surgery as the right half of the chest along with part of the right lung has to be removed and reconstructed, which may lead to the death of a young patient as it has not been done till now, he added.
Taking up this case was not an easy decision as the cancer had involved right chest and part of lung and was previously treated with surgery and radiation. After a thorough evaluation and discussing the case in umour Board, a decision was made to operate, she underwent complete removal of tumour along with 9 ribs and part of right lung and chestwall reconstruction was done with Dual Mesh and Titanium plates(in places of Ribs) on August 31, 2021, he said.
It is learnt that the family members of the patient, through media and friends were referred to Dr Jalaluddin Akbar. The patient and her family came to Yenepoya with the last ray of hope and consulted the Yenepoya Surgical Oncology team.
According to doctors, the removed tumour weighed 2.50 kg.

During the occasion, Yenepoya Medical College Hospital released Yen Media Health Card for media representatives and family.
Dr Prakash RM Saldanha Medical Superintendent of Yenepoya Medical College Hospital, Vijayananda Marketing Executive, Arun Marketing Executive, Dr Mohammed Guthigar, Nelvin, Saad Yenepoya were present.
