Belagavi, Aug 31: The manifesto released by the BJP and promises made by its leaders for the city corporation council election are hurting its own interests. The party leaders are now trying to control the likely damage.
Some of the promises made in its manifesto by the BJP were to perform funerals of people free of cost and regularization of houses which were built on the basis of Rs 100 stamp paper agreement. The promise relating to performing free funeral has become controversial as the city corporation has already been disbursing Rs 5,000 in case of deaths in poor families, and the state government too provides compensation.
The leaders were expected to promise the people that they will see to it that serial deaths which happened during the coronavirus peak days do not recur. Instead, they promised to cremate the dead bodies. This is sure to embarrass the party, people feel. Parties like the Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party have been trying to floor the BJP on these issues. The district in charge minster, Govind Karjol, is compelled to tell the people with folded hands that it was an indiscretion. The minister lamented about this decision and gave further promises.
State BJP president, Nalin Kumar Kateel, visited Belagavi all of a sudden. Several ministers have stationed themselves here to undertake campaigning.
In the meanwhile, the remark of KPCC president, D K Shivakumar that the body of the then union minister, Suresh Angadi, was cremated at Delhi inhumanly instead of bringing it to Belagavi, has been met with resentment by the BJP leaders. Addressing a press conference, Nalin Kumar Kateel and Govind Karjol said that the cremation was performed in Delhi in order not to violate Covid rules. They slammed Shivakumar for making statements without understanding the law governing such issues.
