Kundapur, Aug 30: Don Bosco Senior Secondary School, Trasi celebrated the birth anniversary of Major Dhyanchand as National Sports Day on August 29, in the school auditorium. The program was inaugurated with the lighting of the lamp by the president, Fr Maxim D’Souza, the principal of the school, with Smitha Kumari, the coordinator of middle and secondary section and Shivanand, the health and physical education coordinator as the guests of honour.
Alric Nazareth of Class XI Commerce, highlighted on the life of Major Dhyanchand through his speech in English. Noah Mendonca of class VI performed his skills in Karate. Carol Rebeiro of Class VIII, spoke online in Hindi on the importance of National Sports Day. Dhanvi of class VIII, our international yoga athlete, performed some scintillating yoga postures online. An inspiring documentary on the life of Major Dhyanchand was screened online during the program.
Speaking on the occasion Fr Maxim said that the School has organized this program to educate the students to know more about the life of Major Dhyanchand and inspire them to take up sports seriously in their lives. He marveled at the exceptional potential of Major Dhyanchand in his skills of playing hockey and helping India win Gold medals in three Olympics single handedly. He appreciated his love for the country when he turned down the offer of Hitler to migrate to Germany. He also regretted that in spite of Dhyanchand’s exceptional prowess, the country did not give him the desired respect and recognition towards the end of his life. He exhorted the students to appreciate all sports personalities and emulate them. Quoting the examples of Ravi Shasthri, Vishwanathan Anand, P V Sindhu etc who have passed out from Don Bosco institutions, he encouraged the students to aim for national and international levels in sports.
The entire program was coordinated by Shivanand with the help of teachers and students. Vanitha welcomed the gathering and Shivanand proposed vote of thanks.
