Udupi, Jul 31: Even though the industrial sector of the district suffered due to two successive lockdowns, the food processing and production units did not suffer. In fact, inflow of investment into the food and beverages sector has increased. After the lockdown of the second coronavirus wave, industrial activities have gained momentum again.
As there are a large number of food and beverages units in the district, MSME industrial entrepreneurs are investing on a large scale. There are four industrial areas in the district in Shivalli, Nandikoor, Belapu and Miyyar while three industrial settlements are located in Shivalli, Karkala and Koteshwar. As at 2020, there were 15,280 such units employing 1,17,085 people. Investment in these units amounts to Rs 1,91,552.52 lac.

Cashew, coconut oil, and eatables are the major items produced in these industrial units. It is learnt that investors have been investing more in food processing items. Even young entrepreneurs are attracted towards this sector, and they make use of different government schemes.
As many as 758 from the district have registered themselves in the MSME Udyam app registration.
