Mangaluru, Jul 28: The first additional district and sessions court judge T P Ramalinge Gowda awarded life imprisonment and fine to the convicts in the murder case of Suresh Naika which took place on April 29, 2017.
The convicts are Ananda Naika, Praveen Naika, Vinay, Prakash, Lokesh and Nagaraj.
The court convicted accused under IPC section 120(B) read with 149 IPC with life imprisonment and fine of Rs 5,000 each, IPC 302 with life imprisonment and fine if Rs 10,000 each, rigorous imprisonment of three years and fine of Rs 5,000 each under IPC section 201, simple imprisonment of three months and a fine of Rs 1,000 each under IPC section 143, fine of Rs 1000 and one year of simple imprisonment under IPC section 147 IPC, and simple imprisonment of two years and fine Rs 1000 each under IPC section 148.

The substantive sentence shall run concurrently.
Out of the fine amount, Rs 1 lac shall be given as compensation to the victim’s mother. The court has recommended the District Legal Services Authority to determine and pay adequate compensation to the mother of the deceased.
It may be recalled, accused Anand Naika, a resident of Navoora, who was married, had a one-way love affair with a girl from the region. The accused had asked the girl's hand with her father. But, the family members never accepted the proposal. Later, the girl was engaged with Suresh Naika from Didupe. Learning about this, Anand, over phone, had threatened Suresh, to drop the marriage proposal. When Suresh refused to do so, on April 29, 2017, another accused Praveen Naika had invited Suresh to come Ujire town to seek information about Ganga Kalyan Yojana. When Suresh did so, Praveen along with other accused Vinay, Prakash, Lokesh and Nagaraj kidnapped Suresh in an Omni van from the spot. After kidnapping Suresh, the accused threatened him to drop the marriage proposal with the girl. As Suresh refused to act as per their demand, the accused strangled him to death using a rope. Later, his dead body was burnt iat Aveki under Dharmasthala police station limits. The then Belthangady circle inspector Nagesh Kadri and sub inspector of Dharmasthala police station Koragappa Naika, had filed a charge sheet before the court, after holding a detailed probe.
