Kasargod, Jul 27: A veterinarian from Kerala has invented biodiesel that can be manufactured by using the chicken waste. This diesel is claimed to be 40 percent cheaper as compared to normal diesel and gives 38 km per litre mileage. He had to wait for seven years to get this patent, it is learnt.
The inventor, John Abraham, who works as assistant professor in Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, has claimed that the air pollution from this diesel is about 50 percent less. Abraham had conducted research about producing diesel from the left out chicken waste and birds’ meat between 2009 and 2012. But as the raw materials used for diesel generation are of local sources, he had to obtain permission from the National Biodiversity Authority. He had to wait for several years after filing for a patent, he has claimed.
Abraham had set up a production unit on experimental basis in 2014 in Pookode veterinary college near Kalpetta, Wayanad at a cost of Rs 18 lac. He was provided with finance by Indian Agriculture Research Board. In April 2015, Bharat Petroleum processing unit at Kochi had issued him quality certificate for the diesel generated by him. This diesel was also used for a bus of the said college.
Abraham says that he preferred chicken waste over others for producing diesel as fat content is found more in the meats of birds and pigs and it is easier to extract oil from them. Three of his students are already engaged in doing experiments in extracting diesel from pork.
