Kerala bishop offers sops for families having 5 or more kids

Thiruvananthapuram, Jul 27 (IANS): The Syro Malabar Church Pala diocese has announced sops for all families in their diocese if they have five or more children and this would be applicable to couples who have been married after 2000.

This was announced by the Pala bishop Mar Joseph Kallarangatt while taking part in an online meeting organised by him. Posters have come out which explain the details.

Among the sops that have been offered in the poster, which reads: "Year of the Family, Live the joy of God's love includes a monthly scholarship of Rs 1500, starting from the fourth child and to all future kids of a family, will be given education with scholarship at the church-run St Joseph's College of Engineering and Technology, besides free medical facility for every child after the fourth will be offered at the church-run hospital".

Bishop Mar Joseph Kallarangatt

When eyebrows were raised on this, the bishop accepted that he had said this, and added that he stands by what he has said.

Meanwhile, the Church authorities pointed out they will come out with a detailed statement about it.

You can not blame the Bishop who offered Rs.1500 monthly scholarship for families with 5 or more kids and also PC George for being candid in this respect. As per the census figures, population of the Christians and Hindus came down 2.5% and 6.70% between 1951 and 2011. And the Muslim population went up by 9.10% for the same period. To retain the current level Christians and Hindus should breed at double the current level, if they can afford, failing which they will be out of reckoning in the near future.

If this is indeed true , then its very irresponsible on part of this bishop, who is having a important position in the society and nation in general . We very well know the lack of resources and unemployment crisis brewing and moreover Kerala has the highest density of population. On the contrary they should have rewarded parents who have single child with scholarships.

Is it not true that the population of Christians have stagnated since independence ?? The decline is very evident, the reasons are few kids, migration to distant countries. This plight is similar to the Zoroastrian ( Parsi ) community, who are offering many freebies to increase their presence in our nation !!!

Why does the Bishop want the followers of his faith to increase their population when the government introduced family planning more than five decades ago? We are in the 21st century where many couples in India hardly go for more than 2 kids. It's not the quantity but quality he should strive for. For him it's easier said than done. Let him endorse the plans that help families to have better life.

this is nothing but typical publicity jumla... he promised scholarship, medical care... what about the expenses of bringing up the children... family with larger number of children will require bigger house... who will provide bigger houses... and mostly now a days both husband and wife work... will they be able to give attention and loving care for larger number of children... moreover, if a family has to have 5 children, the woman has to bear children till late 30s or may be early forties... from the medical point of view having children when parents are in 40s is not good...

China had very strict family planning with one child policy. They even forcefully aborted and killed babies to fulfil the norm even in late trimester. Later they allowed 2 children after paying hefty fine, now they have asked the people to have 3rd child. This will help them to have the youngest generation to dominate the world. We are second in that range and our largest export is skilled workers and in the field of medicines, IT engineers, scientists etc. With new generations adopting 1 or 2 kids our population will stagnate or dwindle while poor and less educated in North India are proliferating at high rate pulling our nation and its economy down. India can benefit if this imbalance is narrowed by limiting the nort Indians and encouraging the South Indians to have more kids. More Keralites and Punjabis migrate and settle abroad sending dollars helping our economy too. Europe needs more manpower as their population is aged.

Never in the history of church incentives have been offered to people in this manner. The christian church in India aligns diligently with the national interest. Children are taught patriotism, independence day is celebrated like a Christian festival and even Diwali is celebrated as festival of lights. Vehicles are blessed on Ayudha pooja day. So what this bishop is promoting is a kind of separatism and will be condemned by all Christians in India.

This Bishop has Brains. He knows very well that those who married after 2000, will not have 5 or more children's. May be a few who are uneducated about the sex life, may have produced more children but it will not be more than 1000 in all over India I feel. By the way this is only for Christians....Any way he has not advised to produce more children.....!!!!!!!!

As far the church takes care of their Roti Kapda And Makaan expenses and all the other essential bills till their death, it should be none of our concern if they have 5 or 10 children. Church has lots of works to do especially tribal welfare programs, so I guess these people will be volunteering to work for such noble causes and not be a compitition for rest of the population outside who struggle for jobs in market private or public. As these are Bishop sponsored kids, all their griviences in life should be addressed by the church, not Govt.

Kerala's fertility rate is 1.7 live births per woman in 2020. A few decades ago, an average Kerala Christian family had 6 to 10 children. With very low number of children, far fewer become priests and nuns. So at this rate, the church is doomed. The bishops offer of Rs 1,500 (that too after the fourth child) is not a good enough incentive. So, the plan is certain to fail.

After communist govts 80:20 formula on quota for Christians , it looks above measure urgently needed. It's also alarming that Congress ally Muslim league openly threatening strikes saying not 80 percent v need 100 prcnt. That means Christians zero quota. But as usual Congress is mum. They are secular eventhough kerala seems to be going JK way.
