Mangaluru, Jul 26: The fact that Balekai Hudi (Bakahu - powdered green plantains) revolution has swept across the coastal Karnataka and Malnad regions has been noticed by Prime Minister, Narendra Modi. In his Mann Ki Baat aired on Sunday July 25 he made a mention of Bakahu and how the women have augmented their income by making use of this revolution.
He said that the fact that Bakahu is also used to make dosa and gulab jamuns is appreciable. "This development has taken place during the trying corona infection period. The women not only made dosa and sweets from Bakahu but also uploaded and shared the pictures in social websites. Because of this, demand for the product has gone up. Modi noted that the fact that women are in the forefront of this revolution and therefore can become an inspiration for others to do similar experiments.
Bakahu was primarily being used in Kerala to provide nutritious food to the children. The powder became a widespread commodity due to the efforts of Shree Padre, editor of 'Adike' publication. Inspired by him, a lady from Tumakuru, Nayana Anand, collected the procedure of making this product from Agricultural Science Centre Kerala. Nayana not only produced the powder but also prepared many eatables out of it. After this was spread on the website, it has given rise to Bakahu production getting impetus in the coastal belt of the state too.
