Mangaluru, Jul 24: A sniffer dog that had assisted police investigations for a decade passed away due to cancer on Saturday July 24. The canine's funeral ceremony was held at CAR ground with police honours in the presence of police commissioner N Shashi Kumar and DCP Hariram Shankar the same day.
The detective dog, named Sudha, had served Mangaluru city police commissionarate for 10 years and had helped solved over 700 cases. Born on March 15, 2011, the Doberman Pinscher joined the police force as a one-year-old puppy on April 2, 2012.
Unfortunately, the dog developed cancerous tumour a few months ago, and over the last week, her condition had worsened. She had stopped eating two days ago and passed away on Saturday morning.
Sudha was part of a dog squad that was highly effective in investigations conducted by the police force. The squad was trained by Sandeep for 10 years, and by Kushalappa for the past two years. Sandeep is now with the district armed reserve.
The canine had helped crack murder cases as well as other offences that need crime spot inspections.
"Altogether, there are five sniffing dogs with the city police force, out of which are two are in training and one has passed away," said police commissioner Shashi Kumar.
Sandeep, who had trained Sudha since she was a puppy, said, "I was much attached with the sniffer dog for 10 years. I had even named by two-wheeler after Sudha. Whenever I went away, the dog used to wait for my return."
