Kasargod, Sep 13: In a shocking incident, a police sub-inspector named Vijayakrishnan (53), attached to Chokkadu police station in Malappuram district, who had gone along with a team to arrest an accused named Mujib Rahman, was fired at, and killed by the accused.
The incident occurred on Sunday September 12 at Chokkadu near Kalikavu, 45 kms away from Malappuram. Rahman was facing a case of atrocity on women. The sub-inspector is survived by wife and two children.
To execute an arrest warrant issued by the district family court, the police officer had visited the home of the accused. The accused, after firing at the sub-inspector, fled to the nearby forests, sources said. The police official breathed his last while being taken to a hospital. State home minister, Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, visited the house of Vijayakrishnan, said that the incident was serious, and announced help and compensation to the family of the deceased. Director general of police, Jacob Punnoose, and other senior officials also visited Vijayakrishnan’s house.
On Monday September 13 morning, the bodies of the accused, Mujib Rahman and his wife, were found lying in Thampuran Estate in Nimbur. The neighbourers said they heard two gun shots between 4 and 5 am on Monday. Northern region director general of police, Mahesh Kumar Shingla said Mujib committed suicide after firing at his wife. Two children of Mujib are in the care of policemen now.
