Udupi, Jun 29: It has been about a week since the unlock process started in the district. In addition to the restoration of many activities, buses too have been allowed to ply. However, on account of technical reasons, private buses have so far not begun to offer services in the district.
Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) and National Urban Renewal Mission (NURM) buses have taken to the roads in the district. There have been some instances in which the Covid guidelines were thrown to the winds when operating these buses.
As per the guidelines, only 50 percent of the passenger capacity can be accommodated in buses at any time. There is no provision to carry standing passengers. But KSRTC buses bound for Hebri and Kundapur from the city and again from Kundapur to Bhatkal have been found to be carrying passengers in excess of permitted numbers.
Sometime ago, when private buses carried people in excess of the norms, the passengers were forced to alight. The bus owner and staff were fined. This time, the deputy commissioner had clearly warned that if passengers in excess of 50 percent capacity are accommodated in buses, stern action would be initiated.
Now, the people have been wondering aloud as to whether different yardsticks are being enforced for private and government buses.
KSRTC buses even allowed people to travel on the footboards. On some routes, even the conductor was seen hanging by the rods and standing on the footboard. The people want to know why the officials who are prompt in acting against private buses, show laxity when it comes to government buses.
