Bengaluru: Reverse migration of workers underway - Highway choked

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru (SP)

Bengaluru, Jun 4: The workers who had hurriedly left the city to reach their villages safely before the coronavirus-induced lockdown could create problems for them, have been making a beeline for the city. On Wednesday night and Thursday, vehicles loaded with household goods and people could be seen heading towards the city. As the policemen have not been strictly enforcing traffic rules because of the lockdown, the vehicles were seen moving haphazardly. Most of the vehicles which carried about 20 persons each, some of them atop the roof, and loads of things to the city were vans. The workers came back without getting checked for infection. The Bengaluru-Tumakuru highway witnessed a lot of traffic.

The workers apparently assumed that the lockdown rules would be relaxed from Monday. No efforts were made to stop them at check posts, entry points or tollgates. This gave rise to the suspicion that the government would have given its nod for their return to the city.

When the workers left the city, coronavirus infection was high. Thereafter, infection increased in rural areas. Now the workers have returned and there are worries that they could trigger the infection that has been on the downslide in the city.
