Karkala, Aug 19: Pandurang Prabhu (86), who founded and owned Poornima group of cloth shops, who was popularly known as ‘Pandu Mam’, breathed his last at his residence on Wednesday August 18.
Prabhu, who was identified with Jan Sangh since a young age, remained a veteran BJP leader till the end. He was a good orator, altruist and philanthropist. He was the founding member of Cloth Merchants Association of the twin-districts, member of the board of trustees of local Bhuvanendra College, and was involved with various organizations including Vyasa Raghupati Education Fund, GSB Sabha etc.
Eyes of the late Prabhu were donated to Manipal Hospital as per his wishes. As a mark of respect for the eminent leader, the cloth shops in the town downed their shutters on Wednesday.
Various leaders including state home minister, Dr V S Acharya, MLC, Capt Ganesh Karnik, district BJP unit president, Udayakumar Shetty, entrepreneur, Bola Prabhakar Kamath, MLA, Gopal Bhandary, and scores of others visited his home and paid their last respects.
