Mangaluru: As state grapples with Covid, black fungus a new cause for worry

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP/DV)

Mangaluru, May 16: As per information, over a hundred people from the state have been infected with Mucormycosis, commonly known as black fungus disease while nine have lost their lies. One person each from Bagalkot, Belagavi and Kalaburagi have lost their lives to this disease while two from the city have died.

Black fungus disease is caused by the excessive use of steroids that weakens the immune system of the body as a result of which attack by micro fungi create the problem. It is recommended that those infected by this disease immediately meet an ENT specialist.

As per reports, there have been four cases of black fungas in Mangaluru, including two in Wenlock hospital.

Speaking to daijiworld.com, district health officer (DHO) Dr Kishor Kumar said, "There have been two symptomatic cases of suspected Mucormycosis infection in district Wenlock hospital. As of now, we have not collected data from private hospitals. Today, we will ask all the private hospitals to send the data regarding such cases."

Meanwhile, state health minister Dr K Sudhakar on Sunday, May 16 admitted that while people have yet not recovered from the blow of Covid-19, cases of Mucormycosis infection are on the rise. Many have lost their lives due to the infection. What is worse, there is a scarcity of medication for the treatment of black fungus in the country.

"The state government has asked the union government to supply 20,000 vials of medicines for black fungus. In this regard, I am in touch with union minister D V Sadananda Gowda. We will discuss the issue with the union health ministry," Dr Sudhakar said.

He further said that he has no statistics on how many people have been affected by black fungus in the state, how many have died due to the infection, and how many cases have been registered. "Several people have got admitted to private hospitals, hence we do not have accurate information. We are forming an expert committee which will inform us about the statistics and method of treatment for black fungus," he said.

He also said that in the state nearly 20,000 people are affected by dengue every year. "The numbers will increase during the monsoon. People should be cautious about dengue," he said.

As per reports, so far, 14 persons have been treated for black fungus in Minto Eye Hospital in Bengaluru. Currently, seven such persons are being treated in the Covid ward of Victoria Hospital, and 50 are admitted in different hospitals. Last year too, eight people who recovered from coronavirus infection had been treated for black fungus, out of which two survived and six died.

Time and experience tells us to contain unnecessary projects and space exploration and spending on defense build up, erecting statues and spending of election rallies etc. Country should be ready to utilize available sources and technology on peoples safety and eradication of deadly Covid virus. Our money power, muscle power, ego and pride cannot bring any solution to the present calamity. Better to postpone any forth coming general elections. Congress must forget about contesting in the elections because even if they win they cannot resolve the present grave situation.

Black fungus is very costly to treat; there's only one safe injection, liposomal amphoterecin, which costs ₹7000 per vial; for complete cure one requires 40-60 vials taking the cost of injections itself to ₹4L+; already there is severe shortage of this injection and infection rates are going up dramatically as per ENT surgeons!

@ Sunil k Mangalore - sad situation of this country is that there still people waiting to live for modi & die for modi despite terrific pandemic that has crippled the country to ground zero they do this because of spirituality & religion they are not interested in development of this country. Congress misused all the options earlier through scams & illegal activities & there's is no proper candidate for PM post & never will be one..that's the reason they found a charismatic leader modi is what they wanted since a long time.

@Bhavya Baliga, "Established in 1880 by Dr TJ O’Donnell and his brother JD O’Donnell, it has 800 beds and was the largest hospital in Asia in the early 20th century." Again the credit goes to the 'British'. BJP is utilizing the structure. Tell me a hospital which has been built by BJP alone. AIIMS "However, the NDA government lasted only nine months after the announcement, after which the UPA government came to power in 2004. Although the setting up of six new AIIMS was announced and sanctioned during NDA government's time, these hospitals were built during the UPA's regime. When the BJP-led NDA government came to power in 2014, it announced four new AIIMS, seven more in 2015 and then two more in 2017. However, according to a FactChecker analysis in June 2018, only 3% of sanctioned funds were released to build 11 new AIIMS. Further, a 2018 report by the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) revealed that the shortage of faculty posts ranged from 55% to 83% in the six new AIIMS and shortage of non-faculty posts ranged from 77% to 97%. The report even read that, "1,318 equipment having an estimated cost of Rs 454 crore remained undelivered as on 31 March 2017 for periods up to 25 months from the due date of delivery." Since the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government came to power in 2014, the opening up of 15 new AIIMS were sanctioned under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY) scheme. However, as of April, 2021, only seven AIIMS are fully functional. This includes the first AIIMS established in 1956 and the six new AIIMS under Phase 1. In all, 22 AIIMS have been sanctioned to be set up under PMSSY. Of the eight phases that were planned, only one phase is fully operational while the remaining seven phases, ie. 16 AIIMS are still under various stages of construction. The timeline for completion of the remaining 16 phases are between December 2020 to January 2025" Thus since 2014 not even one AIIMS has been built or is operatio

Please check the facts as per you AIIMS was started by NDA then how come upa built it. Why not UPA built hospitals during their regime. They never anniunced anything related to health. Stop blaming NDA all the time.

This hospital is a part of Kolar Gold Mines and owing to gold prices were low in 2000, this facility was closed as deep mining was uneconomical then. Now since the price of gold has gone up, they are thinking of reviving the mines. This hospital was built for its workers. Hospital was closed, because no worker was on site. This is not a hospital meant for general public. The hospital does not have oxygen plant or ventilators. Everything has to be arranged. Hence, to say the defunct hospital is revived is not correct, as after covid is over, general public may not use the facility.

The hospitals were established in 1880 by Dr TJ O’Donnell and his brother JD O’Donnell during British era unused for about 20 years. Supposedly this is the responsibility of state govt to renovate but RSS registered their organization merely for an agenda. Waise bhi RSS aur Angrez ke sambandh bahut gehre the. RSS should convert their shakhas into covid care centres if they genuinely call themselves as nationalists.

It is all written in the Bible... Luke 21:11 there will be great earthquakes, and in various places famines and pestilences; and there will be terrors and great signs from heaven. Luke 21:25 “There will be signs in the sun, the moon, and the stars, and on the earth distress among nations confused by the roaring of the sea and the waves. 26 People will faint from fear and foreboding of what is coming upon the world, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken.
