Udupi, Aug 14: Leading Non-resident Indian Entrepreneur, B R Shetty, has promised to open a hospital and a school in the name of his late father in his family property in Ambalpady here, and an engineering college in Malpe. “Both the school and hospital will be meant to serve the dalits, free of cost. A road that will help the fishermen will also be built there,” he announced.
Dr Shetty, a former vice president of the municipality, who has grown into a leading entrepreneur in Abu Dhabi, made these promises during his valedictory address at the state level convention of municipal councils on Friday August 13.
While reminiscing the conditions prevalent when he fought the municipal election in 1968-69 and the support he received from the people to undertake development works, Shetty’s voice was choked. “I always wanted to thank the citizens of this city for extending a helping hand to me during the difficult period. I got this opportunity today,” he remarked.
“We did not have any experience in administration, and the town was behind in various aspects. I fought the election with Dr V S Acharya under the banner of Jan Sangh. M Somashekhar Bhat provided us guidance. At that time, Jan Sangh was ruling only two cities in the country, New Delhi and Udupi,” he recollected.
He said that water supply and underground drainage projects had been taken up in the city for the first time during his period. He thanked Chief Minister, B S Yeddyurappa, for releasing liberal grants to local bodies now, and wished that the local bodies will make best use of the funds and achieve overall development of their towns and cities.
