Religious, political gathering behind India's Covid resurgence: WHO

Geneva, May 13 (IANS): The World Health Organization (WHO) has blamed several religious and political mass gathering events for fuelling India's dramatic surge in new cases and deaths.

The spread of B1617 and other variants (B117), coupled with low adherence to public health and social measures were other factors for the resurgence of Coronavirus cases in India.

"A recent risk assessment of the situation in India conducted by WHO found that resurgence and acceleration of Covid-19 transmission in India had several potential contributing factors, including increase in the proportion of cases of SARS-CoV-2 variants with potentially increased transmissibility; several religious and political mass gathering events which increased social mixing," the global health agency said in its weekly epidemiological update on the pandemic on Tuesday.

The exact contributions of each of these factors on increased transmission in India are not well understood, the WHO said.

The WHO's SARS-CoV-2 Virus Evolution Working Group on Tuesday determined that viruses within the lineage B1617, first reported in India in October 2020, are a variant of concern.

The B1617 variant was, till now, deemed a 'variant of interest' by the WHO. It now has been added to the list of other Covid-19 "variants of concern" -- UK (B117), South African (B1351) and Brazilian (P1) variants.

The B1617 variant was declared as a variant of concern based on early evidence of higher rates of transmission, including its observed rapid increases in prevalence in 44 countries, the WHO said.

"The prevalence of several VOCs (variant of concern) including B117 and B1617 sublineages increased concurrent to the surge in Covid-19 cases reported in India," the WHO update stated.

According to the update, approximately 0.1 per cent of positive samples in India have been sequenced and uploaded to open-access database GISAID (Global Initiative on Sharing Avian Influenza Data) to identify SARS-CoV-2 variants.

While B117 and B16171 variants have begun to wane in recent weeks, a marked increase in the proportion of viruses sequenced as B16172 has been observed over the same period.

"Since the identification of these variants through late April 2021, B16171 and B16172 accounted for 21 per cent and 7 per cent of sequenced samples from India, respectively," said the UN health agency.

It added that preliminary analyses using sequences submitted to GISAID suggest that B16171 and B16172 have a substantially higher growth rate than other circulating variants in India.

Besides India, the UK has reported the largest number of cases sequenced as B1617 sub-lineages, the update said.

India on Thursday reported 3,62,727 new Covid cases and 4,120 fatalities, the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said. In the past 21 days India's daily Covid tally has plateaued over the three-lakh-mark and over 3,000 casualties for a fortnight. India's total tally of Covid-19 cases now stands at 2,37,03,665 with 37,10,525 active cases and 2,58,317 deaths so far.

WHO is a paid organization that represents vested interests. They still could not certainly conclusivelysay, if COVID was synthesized in the lab or it actually originated from illegal meat shop in China. Either way, they will be at the losing end because, big chunk of annual funding for WHO comes from China. When several parts of Maharashtra was under lockdown, people in rest of the country saw it as Maharashtra's problem and cared little. Wearing mask or policing mask was unheard of in March. Which religious gathering was responsible for the spread then? Lockdown was a taboo then. No, we did not believe in vaccine then as we believe it now. Which religious gathering was responsible for that gut feeling? Most of the casualties from COVID was from people in the age group of 30~40 years. They cared less for the pandemic. Which religious gathering was the reason for this high risk appetite? Even today, most apartments have not got ridden of maids even when we are under lockdown. It is people's attitude coupled with false reinforcement from leftist media that is responsible. Even today, religious gathering are still happening. Marriage functions are also happening.

the BJP Govt at the center notably the PM and Amit Shah alongwith the Elections commissioners of India are totally responsible for this sad state of affairs and the loss of precious human lives due to the in the second wave of the Covid. The Prime Minister has completely failed to provide a sense of safety, direction or leadership during this massive human crisis we are facing. Hey Mr, you have a problem with your eyes forget about mind. Dont you see how many people are dead and so many are begging for oxygen. Whole world is helping India but politicians in India still are on political rallies along with mass populations which is a triggered this spread of virus. It is not a rocket science to understand. Everyone know the danger of this virus and how fast it spreads. After knowing the facts these politicians had mass rallies and put people lives in danger. My father is 90 yrs old and did not step out from his house since Mar2020 more than a year. Trying to stop spreading this virus. He was very healthy but due to self isolation made him catch up his age. People like you dont understand simple logic and sit and bla.me for WHO given a right report so that people understand this deadly virus and stop the spread. Please take extra care in stop the spread otherwise you are not different than ignorant human. God bless you

Hi Alwyn, Canada, I do not endorse this government and I totally hold the government responsible for this failure. But my point was on WHO. Has the WHO done any good to contain this virus? Has WHO spoken about where the virus originated from. Do you believe a virus can cause you gasp for oxygen. This is something more than a virus. I believe this is a bioterrorism. Why did WHO make it mandatory for masks and then in between relax rules. Are you sure wearing masks throughout is good. You are worried about your father I agree. Do you know how many children have become orphans not just in India, but in other parts of the world as well. Is WHO not responsible for this disaster? A man made disaster.Did it take social media age to evolve for bats to pass on this virus to humans? Can any buffoon buy this. My total point is that WHO is incompetent and has no moral right to comment on any country when it has failed by itself.

WHO has acknowledged that the most infectious mutant B1617, has been the result of an uncontrolled religious, political gatherings across India.. With no hospital beds, oxygen, ventilators nor life saving drugs, our society has become the worst effected nation across the entire world !!! Moreover there is open brinkmanship, being displayed by opponents to the Union government. Indians were under a very wrong sense of bravado of being immune to this demonic plague...The worst is yet to come as this virus has rapidly being transmitted to the vast rural areas, where there is no iota of any health care infrastructures !!! This is the reason why bodies are dumped into rivers and canals !!!!

Recently, there have been cases of people catching the virus, even some catering staff & photographers & some casualties too! Need of the hour is to completely ban gatherings of any kind!

As a result corona viruse was spread like a wild fire. The unwanted elections during da corona period was an added advantage to fuel rising corona virus. Looks like Left leaning WHO is the real culprit of this their PCR pandemic. Now they got good excuses to blame on these gatherings. There are no tests for common cold which are also called coronaviruses, except for influenza. These high sensitive RTPCR tests seem detect both seasonal common cold coronaviruses and covid 19 as Corona Positive. That's why high percent recoveries but deaths due to choking of medical infrastructure of these high number of cases, serious cases not getting required attention also because of their comorbidities. This looks like for elites and communists (using their puppet WHO and financing many in medical fraternity and health ministries around world) to make money through billions of dollor vaccine business and online businesses to finance their new world order or communist control of the world using this wuhan lab made virus. If mutant generating vaccines adding woes especially covishied it is not surprising as similarly happened, a severe second wave in Uk soon after starting of vaccination there.
