Karnataka overtakes Maharashtra in coronavirus cases, tops list

Bengaluru, May 11: Karnataka has overtaken Maharashtra to claim the dubious distinction of being at the top of the country with highest infection spread on a single day. On Monday May 10 evening, Maharashtra's tally stood at 37,236 cases while Karnataka clocked 39,305 cases.

The fear has come true. So far, per day corona infections used to be highest in Maharashtra. Karnataka used to be in the second spot. But now, Karnataka has raced ahead of Maharashtra and risen to the top slot.

Coronavirus infection has killed 596 people in the state of which 374 were from Bengaluru. In Maharashtra, 549 died of this infection. In both the number of new cases and deaths, Karnataka is ahead of Maharashtra.

A 14-day curfew has been imposed in the stat as a measure to control coronavirus infection. People vehicles however have been moving around. Shortage of beds and oxygen continues. The queues at the graveyards for performing funerals have not become shorter. Bruhat Bengaluru Mahananagara Palike has arranged for freezer boxes near the graveyards to preserve the bodies till their turn comes. At the same time, vaccines are in short supply at various places. Coronavirus continues to make lasting impact on the lives of the people with its continued march in Karnataka.
