Mangaluru, May 10: Dakshina Kannada district in-charge minister, Kota Srinivas Poojary, on Sunday May 9, visited Malabar, Laxmi and Karnad oxygen refilling units located at Baikampady in the city and scrutinized the process of oxygen generation and refilling of cylinders.

Poojary posed questions and collected information about the quantum of oxygen received by the units, and also about the local generation of oxygen and its refilling and supply to different hospitals. He instructed the units to supply oxygen refilled and produced in these three units to hospitals as per their demand for treating the patients. He advised the units to take precautionary steps to ensure that there is no defect in the transportation of cylinders and shortage of oxygen stock in any of the hospitals.

Poojary asked the units to cut down the quantum of oxygen provided to industries and provide oxygen to medical field on priority. He also favoured to increase local generation of oxygen.

The minister said that oxygen is provided to only those patients whose health condition has deteriorated. "The district administration decides about who is in need of oxygen and whom it should be supplied. Patients in dire straits will be provided with oxygen and ventilator beds on priority," he explained.

Poojary opined that duro cylinders can be given for the use of ventilators in taluk hospitals as more oxygen can be stored in them. He said they last for two days and a plan to import them from abroad has been envisaged. Deputy commissioner of the district, Dr Rajendra K V, said that officials have been appointed to monitor functioning of the oxygen units all the 24 hours of the day.

MLA Dr Y Bharath Shetty, zilla panchayat chief executive officer, Dr Kumar, and assistant drug controller Ramakant Kunte, Shankar Naik, and the officials were present.

Oxygen generation involves a very simple process of compressing the ambient air upto liquification of oxygen. When Oxygen is in liquid form it looks similar to what you see inside a cigarette lighter. Ambient air contains 78.5% nitrogen and 20.5% Oxygen so when pressurized the oxygen liquifies and can be separated out and further purified. This is 99% pure oxygen which can be used for medical grade oxygen purposes. Only problem here is there is large amount of electricity is required and high pressure (upto 50kg/cm2) handling equipment , piping is also required. Here it Looks like govt. does not have right mechanisms to divert electricity in a short span of time or lacks expertise to set up plant in a short time.

The process of Liquifcation of Air to produce Liquid Oxygen is not as simple as described. Temperatures of upto -183 degree C has to be achieved and the cost of a plant with break even production is upwards of 4 crores. Hence, what we see in Mangalore and surrounding areas are refillers who bring Liquid Oxygen in Tankers and refill them in Cylinders by compressing Gaseous Oxygen to 140 kg/cm2(not 50 kg/cm2)and Dura Liquid Containers. What needs to be done during this time of shortages is to optimse the Oxygen usage. A healthy person consumes only about 500 litres of Oxygen forthe whole day. Whatever excess Oxygen inhaled is exhaled without utilizing it. During administration of Oxygen,The only waste in exhaled gas is carbon-di-oxide and water vapor. In a closed circuit system, these can be removed by passing through Sodalime and the residual Gas containing pure oxygen can be inhaled again. If a patient is being administered 10 liters per minute Oxygen, the same result can be achieved using less than 1 litre per minute Oxygen. A lot of lives could be saved by using Oxygen judicially during these trying times.
