Mangaluru: Traffic police recommend creation of 210 auto stands in city

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, May 6: With a view to streamline traffic and address the problem of shortage of auto stands in the city, the traffic police have conducted a survey. They have now recommended to the city corporation to provide 210 auto stands in the city.

At present there are only 68 authorised auto stands in the city. About 20 among them have lost their existence during the footpath construction, road expansion etc under the Smart City project. Unofficially there are about 300 auto stands here.

If the corporation approves the recommendation and authorises 210 auto rickshaw stands, the number of total authorised auto stands here will go up. At the same time, there are chances of the police removing some of the unauthorised auto stands which create problems for smooth traffic.

As per a joint survey conducted in 2013, it was said that about 500 auto sands can be created here. The corporation session held in 2018-19 had given approval for 241 stands. But it was not implemented. The auto union leaders have urged for providing at least 241 authorised auto stands in the city. The auto rickshaw drivers and owners are peeved at the fact that the Smart City officials have overlooked their demand for proper auto stands, but have planned to develop 20 bus shelters under the Smart City project.

Assistant commissioner of police, M A Nataraj, said that the report is meant to provide authorisation to the auto stands in the city. Mayor Premananda Shetty, says that the corporation is prepared to implement the police report and make 210 auto stands official.

Why are most of the auto stands on the wrong side of the road? Apart from driving on the wrong side of the road(for a short distance), at many stands, passenger have to get in from the traffic side of the road instead of from footpath side which is risky.

The traffic police are planning auto stands in the city, there is no mention of number of autos in each stand there should be a limit of autos in each stand. Some places there are 20 to 30 autos at one stand at a give point of time. Public place is not for the autos. Are the traffic police planning bus stands with shelter for the bus passengers. Before this bogus smart city works we had bus stands atleast during the rains commuters could be protected from the rains and providing shade during the rest of them year. Now once this bogus smart city works have started all the bus stand shelters have disappeared. Commuters have a tough time during the rainy season and also during the summer days too.

How about making auto fares on meters compulsory first? How long will auto-rickshaws continue to fleece the customers?

This is a ridiculous idea. On the contrary, the existing rickshaw stands should be scrapped. There should be a control on how many auto rickshaws can wait in Q in one stand. Instead the stupid idea of creating more such stands is just bowing to the demands of Auto Drivers. General public is not asking for any such stands. It is the Traffic Dept who wants to do this favour. How can public property be misused by reserving for auto rickshows? Years back, when there were no such stands, autos were available all over the city and one could easily get an auto close to their house. Now they have to walk till the stand!!! Only in case of hospitals, crowded main bus stops or junctions, one can imagine such auto stands. If Traffic Dept so keen on creating parking places, let them spend their energy in creating parking places for private vehicles . Let them control 2 wheelers misusing parking place meant for 4 wheelers.

Some concerns Will these new auto stands have roof cover like the old ones. The very idea of building auto shelters on roadside and on median space ( in some cases ) is not a planned city approach. Now that we are in digital age autos on call like Uber / Ola will be a better move . There can be designated open spaces/grounds ( The timing can be restricted as in the evenings they are used for recreation or even fuel stations which can allow parking of autos . The autos can have designated areas or routes like city buses which will avoid congestion in auto stands of high hiring prospects. The malls and supermarkets should have designated auto parks with minimum slots ( always occupied). The auto density ( no of autos per area / ward can be restricted) . Since the charges are fixed for city limits ( the city limit should not be changed by auto drivers to charge additional fare) the will not go there , it is double fare verdict of drivers should not be allowed.
