Mangaluru, Apr 25: A fight erupted at the district sub-jail here on Sunday April 25, resulting in injuries to at least two prison inmates.
The fight erupted between during breakfast, sources said.
A robbery-accused undertrial identified as Sameer allegedly assaulted an inmate named Ansar using spoon and other kitchen utensils. He also injured an inmate identified as Zainuddin.
While Ansar suffered injuries on arm and leg, Zainuddin was injured on shoulders and back.
Sameer had been arrested in connection with a robbery case in Panambur last July, while Ansar was arrested last month and Zainuddin in a docoity case under Moodbidri limits.
Both the injured have been admitted to the district Wenlock Hospital.
City police commissioner Shashi Kumar visited the prison. It is learnt that he took to task inmates who were involved in the incident.
Speaking to media persons, police commissioner Shashi Kumar said, "Sameer who was involved in attempt-to-murder and robbery cases, has assaulted Ansar and Zainuddin in the morning. While jail staff tried to prevent the attack, he attacked them too. He was shifted to a separate barrack.
"After the incident, I along with the staff visited the spot. When he was called for inquiry, he misbehaved by hurling things at police officials. We will book the case as per the information given by jail authorities. We will also take complaint from the victims. Jail staff sustained minor injuries. Sameer has a habitual tendency of attacking cops. He was also prompting other inmates to create such nuisance," the commissioner said.
Two cases have been registered in Barke police station in connection to the assault on Ansar and Zainuddin under section 307 and sections related to rioting with common object. Two more cases of assault against civil and prison police and obstruction to duty will be registered separately.
About 20 inmates have been shifted to different jails in Belagavi, Shivamogga and Dharwad. Further police custody will be taken for investigation, said the police commissioner.
