Mangaluru, Apr 23: A person has been arrested on Thursday, April 22, in connection to the extortion and threatening of Kerala based businessman Haneef, informed police commissioner N Shashi Kumar.
The arrested has been identified as 33-year-old Divya Darshan from Falnir.
Divya Darshan had called Haneef to a flat at Kadri claiming that he has a threat to his life and kept him under house arrest for two months. Divya Darshan and his associates threatened Haneef and demanded money on two occasions, first, the accused demanded Rs 30 lac and the second time it was Rs 55 lac.
Divya Darshan also had taken possession of a Jaguar car from Haneef on the pretext of settling a dispute with his brother and kept that car in his custody.
Haneef was in Dubai and came to India on a business trip to secure a license for bauxite mining. It was during this time that he got in touch with Divya Darshan. The accused claimed that he had contacts with high profile people and extorted money from Haneef.
"Haneef had even registered a complaint against the accused at Kadri Police station. His associates will soon be arrested," assured the police commissioner.
